of this letter, were it not that Dr Jam advised to take a longer

route instead of hurrying through the Red Sea at this season. I hope, however to be in London early in October.

I have &c.

(Signed.) W. H. Rennie,

Auditor General.

Colonial Surgeon's Office,

Hongkong, 25 June, 1859.

Mr. W. H. A. Rennie having only

lately recovered from a severe attack of pleuro-pneumonia, followed by the passage of a renal calculus, accompanied by inflammation of the intestines, which has left him much weakened, I am of opinion that he should proceed to Europe without delay, spend a considerable time there and leave the question of a return to the Colony dependent on his entire restoration to perfect health.

(Signed.) J. L. Murray, M.D.

(True Copies.)

To: Jardine Matheson, Colonial Secretary

Colonial Surgeon.
